Antibiotic Review

5 Pharmacology CE hours

Participant will have access to course for 1 year.

Course Description: Increasing antimicrobial resistance is now a worldwide problem, compounded by the lack of development of new antimicrobial medicines. This leaves the prudent use of antimicrobial medicines, along with infection control, as the major strategies to counter this emerging threat. A safe and effective strategy for antibiotic use involves prescribing an antibiotic only when it is needed and selecting an appropriate and effective medicine at the recommended dose, with the narrowest spectrum of antimicrobial activity, fewest adverse effects and lowest cost.

Choosing an antibacterial agent can be challenging, given the wide array of drugs available. This course is intended as an overview of the general characteristics of the major antibiotic classes, with a brief discussion of the individual agents, indications, adverse reactions, and dosing. The course will focus on the major groups of antibiotic: penicillin's, cephalosporins, aminoglycosides, macrolides, fluoroquinolones, sulfonamides, and tetracycline's. This is a self paced course. Videos are self read materials.

This course is approved for 5 contact hours of continuing education through the Kentucky Board of Nursing and meets the Kentucky State Board requirements for all nurses. RX CE = 5.0

  3. Discuss mechanism of action, indications, dosages, and precautions for the most commonly ordered antibiotics.
  4. Integrate new learning of appropriate antibiotic use into practice

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the course start and finish?
The course starts now and you will have access to it for one year. It is a completely self-paced online course - you decide when you start and when you finish.
Are the CE good for ANCC renewal for nurse practitioners?
Yes. Per ANCC at least 51% of the total number of contact hours must be in your certification role and specialty and at least 50% must be formally ANCC accredited/approved. So 50% must be ANCC and 50% can be from another approved provider as long as it meets the CE requirements of 1 contact hour = 60 minutes. All CE on this site are Kentucky Board of Nursing approved and meet the requirements for AANC and AANP.
Will this course meet my pharmacology requirements for ANCC?
Yes. Per ANCC 25 of the 75 required contact hours must be in pharmacotherapeutics. Important note: If you double category 1, there is NO requirement to double the number of pharmacotherapeutic hours. These 25 pharmacotherapeutic hours do not need to be formally ANCC accredited/approved, provided the certified nurse meets the requirements for Category 1 contact hours. (That requirement is: at least 51% of the total number of contact hours must be in your certification role and specialty and at least 50% must be formally ANCC accredited/approved.)
Will AANP accept Kentucky Board of Nursing contact hours for recertification?
Yes, per the AANP renewal handbook is a list of various acceptable, accredited, and independent organizations that may provide advanced nursing CE content for NPs seeking renewal through continuing education credit. State Boards of Nursing is list as acceptable. Therefore they will accept Kentucky Board of Nursing CE.

Thank you for choosing Nurse Nerd Inc for your continuing education. At the end of the course is a course evaluation form. Once the evaluation of the course is completed your CE certificate will be available by email.
